My interest in photography began just a few years ago, and I got my first DSLR camera for Christmas 2012. I've been completely self taught through lots of trial and error! Photography nicely augments my other hobbies which mostly revolve around the outdoors. I thoroughly enjoy an outing with my camera in some beautiful place. The vast majority of my photography is outdoors and I do very little to set up a photo: I just shoot what I see in a way that I find pleasing and/or artistic.

Creatively Edited : It is fun to see just where you can take a photo with some editing. I don't make a regular practice of this level of editing because it can take a great deal of time. Sometimes it feels like a waste of that time in trial and error, other times the reward is something fun and unique.

Partial Lunar Eclipse June 4, 2012 : Photos from the partial lunar eclipse on June 4, 2012. I used two different lenses. One goes to 300mm but is softer, and one is sharper but only goes to 200mm. It was a trade-off. All photos are cropped. Exposures were varied to capture different features of the moon and eclipse. As the eclipse reached its maximum (5:06 local) the moon was setting behind a mountain and the sun was rising behind me allowing me to capture the horizon. There was still a substantial eclipse happening when the moon disappeared from view.

May 30, 2012 - "Sharing is Caring"

This is me trying to expand on my photography. I practically grew up on a horse (these horses are my Mother's) and as a kid could draw them quite well. However, I'd really like to be better at photographing them!

A big thank you to all who commented on my mountain ash. I am honored! I'm such a newbie to this community and have so much to learn, but you all make me feel right at home. Plus, the dailies are a non-stop source for learning and inspiration!

June 3, 2012 - Home on the range.

We went to the Portneuf Rendezvous yesterday. This canvas tent over by itself caught my eye. The location for the rendezvous was beautiful and really lent itself to big landscape shots. I wish I was better at these kinds of shots, but I sure got in some good practice yesterday!

May 28, 2012 - The Field of Heroes, Pocatello Idaho. There is a cross bearing the name, rank, branch of service and date of death for every service member killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.
My daughter and husband are reading about Medal of Honor recipient SSG Robert Miller.

It's been windy and raining pretty good for nearly three straight days. The Field of Heroes has standing water nearly everywhere, but that hasn't stopped the flow of people coming to pay their respects. It's always so incredibly emotional for me to go to these kind of things, but I felt better seeing how many people came out in spite of the weather. I'll have more photos to follow, but I'll probably make a gallery specifically for them. We visited the cross for a young man we were stationed with and shed a few tears. We stood there and wondered about all the people we'd served with whom we'd lost touch with over the years.

June 7, 2012 - Come and get it!

I won't likely be around much tomorrow, so I'm posting my photo of the day a wee be early (for me, some of you are already on Thursday!). This is the soup barrel on the side of a covered wagon in the Fort Hall Replica at the Bannock County History Museum.

What is exciting (for me at least) about these shots, and what I forgot to mention yesterday: These are my first attempt at processing RAW images. I typically just go straight out of the camera with a JPEG, but several weeks ago I set my camera to take JPEG and RAW with the intention of teaching myself some RAW processing skills. I have a long way to go, but considering my first few looked worse than an worn out snap shot from the 60's, I think I've come a long way! I currently am using my 30 day trial of Corel Paintshop Pro X4. I know Photoshop is the gold standard, but I'm cheap (and broke).

June 15, 2012 - Bitterroot in the Cinder Garden

The Craters of the Moon National Monument series continues! This is bitterroot. Craters of the Moon has numerous places that are "cinder gardens." You can see that there is no soil and it's nothing but volcanic rock and glass in little gravel sized pieces. You would NOT want to walk here in bare feet! But, many small moisture conserving plants manage to thrive in the cinder gardens and turn what was just a hill of black rock into blankets of very close to the ground flowers. Most are not more than an inch or two tall.

June 6, 2012 - What do you do when the weather stinks and you won't be able to see the transit of Venus? CRY!

Instead of crying, we visited the Bannock County History Museum yesterday. This metal sculpture was one of several in the sage brush outside the museum. I don't know who the artist was, but I'd love to credit them. I have a whole lot of fun pictures from the museum, so they will probably be a source of daily photos for a few days. I'm sure I'll just end up making an album for them

June 11, 2012 - Pioneers

I missed yesterday, but it was worth it. I spent a ton of time behind the camera and ended up with more than 300 new pictures. That's what a whole day in a National Monument will do to you!

This photo is in Craters of the Moon National Monument near Arco, Idaho. This area is a series of basalt lava flows and cinder cones that erupted beginning about 15,000 years ago. The most recent eruption here was about 2,000 years ago and much of the more recent lava flows have little to no plant life on them. This is a hearty little pioneer growing out of the cracks in the basalt.

June 4, 2012 - Partial Eclipse of the Strawberry Moon at Sunrise

Yes, I hauled myself out of bed at 3:15 am this morning so that I could take a stab at photographing the eclipse. This is only the 2nd time I've shot the moon (1st was the supermoon). This shot is at 5:06 am when the eclipse was at maximum and the sun was already rising, hence you can see the horizon as the moon sets. It was gone just a few minutes later.

I have a TON of pictures at different exposures where you can see the craters with the eclipse. I'll post another gallery with those as I get them all uploaded.

June 1, 2012 - The Eager Johnny Jump-Up

Something about this little guy just looked like an eager beaver to me. Most of the Johnny Jump-Ups were gathered together in clumps, but this one was out in the gravel of the driveway all by it's self. I particularly like the view of this one in the larger sizes. This is SOOC with the exception of a crop and cleaning up some dust/debris on the flower itself that was reflecting light in an odd way.

I can't thank you all enough for the kind comments left not just on my current PAD, but on past ones and even others from my galleries. I've said it before, but I'll say it again: The Dailies is really a great community!

May 29, 2012 - "Ready to Burst"
The Mountain Ash in my Mother's front yard is beginning to bloom. Many of the sprigs of blossoms have burst open already and are filling the air with an oh so sweet scent. This little bunch however, must be slow to the party.

- A HUGE thank you for all of the wonderful comments on my Memorial Day photo of my husband and daughter in the Field of Heroes. I was elated to log in last night and see it at the #1 spot in popular photos on SmugMug for the day. I am so incredibly pleased that the photo helped to commemorate Memorial Day and those whom have made the ultimate sacrifice, as well as to bring some attention to the wonderful tribute that Idaho does for them each Memorial Day. June 5, 2012 - Garden Creek Gap. Bannock County, Idaho.

This narrow gap is just wide enough for a small two lane road to go through. There is no shoulder on the road. It's a beautiful area of fun geology (my real passion in life).

June 12, 2012 - The Blue Dragon Flow

Thanks for the interest in my photo of the bush growing out of the side of a lava flow. This is another photo from Craters of the Moon National Monument. This is a portion of the Blue Dragon Flow. You may have guessed how it got the name!

The Blue Dragon Flow is like nothing else on earth. It is the only location where blue basalt has been found. The rock is not blue all the way through it, the color appears only at the surface. It's not fully understood why this happened, but it's believed to be related to the cooling conditions of the lava flow.

Not all parts of the Blue Dragon Flow are this vibrant or solid, most of it is narrow bands of color. The blue portions are best seen in full sunlight when they really light up with this peacock blue color. It has a very glass-like luster. In fact, if it's quite cloudy, you won't notice the blue unless you look closely. Given that it was a mostly cloud day, I had to be patient to get this shot.

May 25, 2012 - Got the family out for a walk in the National Forest and these were everywhere. Some Google searching, and I believe that they are Western Tent Caterpillars. They were wriggling and writhing about in the sun and crawling in and out of the tent. The whole thing was full of them.

Definitely check this one out in the larger sizes!

May 24, 2012 - I haven't gotten any photography in over the last couple days, so here is another one from last Saturday. This is the Snake River down-river from Shoshone Falls. The canyon is magnificent and is cut through the basalt that covers the Snake River Plain.

Another photo from Craters of the Moon National Monument. And older lava flow is in the foreground, and in the background is the very end of the Lost River Range.

Thanks for all the comments on the Blue Dragon Flow. It really is a unique and beautiful thing to see.

June 2, 2012 - A creek up the Gibson Jack trail, Bannock County Idaho.

I'm posting the photo of the day bit early since I likely won't be around tomorrow. This photo was taken a couple days ago on a family hike.

May 22, 2012 - Another shot of old ranch equipment from my visit to Dad's. This is an old axle that was buried in the ground for some unknown reason. I shot the axle from a couple different angles and some zoomed out a bit, as well as a few shots in B&W. I haven't done anything with this image, this is how it came out of the camera. I kind of like it, but also go back and forth in my head wondering if it needs something more.
